Scope and Content Bailie John McMorran's House from the pend arch at Riddle's Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Bailie McMorran's house was built in the late 16th century for Bailie John McMorran, a wealthy merchant and city magistrate. It is an example of 'the gentlemen's mansions' 'obscurely found' in the closes off the Lawnmarket. The house, built round an inner courtyard, has seven low doorways, framed by rough pilasters. The windows originally had glass in the upper halves and wooden shutters below. The interior has 18th-century painted panelling by James Norie. Bailie John McMorran, a wealthy city magistrate, was shot dead by a schoolboy while trying to restore order at the Royal High School riot in 1595. The boys had been denied a week's holiday.
