Date 7/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 426181

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Abbotsford Mill, also known as the Waverley or Nether Mill, Galashiels, Selkirkshire The first part of this mill was built in 1805 as a woollen mill. It was presumably a spinning mill, as weaving was then a hand process, carried out mainly in the homes of the workers. This view shows on the right the three-storey and attic mill of 1805, and the magnificent octagonal brick chimney, probably built in 1866 when the three storey and attic block on the left was built. There are weaving sheds in the foreground. This mill was still operating at the time this photograph was taken. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
