Scope and Content Abbotsford Mill, also known as the Waverley or Nether Mill, Galashiels, Selkirkshire The first part of this mill was built in 1805 as a woollen mill. It was presumably a spinning mill, as weaving was then a hand process, carried out mainly in the homes of the workers. This view shows on the left the three-storey and attic mill of 1805, and the magnificent octagonal brick chimney, probably built in 1866 when the mill was enlarged. The low buildings to the right of the 1805 block are not part of the mill. This mill was still operating at the time this photograph was taken. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
