Scope and Content Steam mill engine, Philiphaugh Mill, Selkirk, Selkirkshire This engine was built to complement water power at Philiphaugh mill. It was built by Petrie of Rochdale, a noted Lancashire firm. This view shows the flywheel of the engine, used to keep it running evenly. It is protected by a polished iron and brass casing, an unusual feature. Note that the connecting rod has been removed from this side of the engine. Steam engines similar to this were widely used in the textile industry before electric power was widely available. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
