Scope and Content Sawmill, Fairnielee, Selkirkshire This is a typical small rural sawmill, original water-powered. This view shows a pile of logs waiting to be sawn, with the mill behind. In the left background is an open-sided shed for storing planks to season them. Small estates usually had such mills until the mid 20th century, but they were becoming rare by the 1970s.
