Scope and Content Burial monument commemorating John Burnett, Bo'ness churchyard, Falkirk This monuments commemorates John Burnett, a lockmaker, who died in 1854. Also buried here are his wife Euphemia and their children. A datestone of 1722 suggests that an older gravestone has been reused as a centrepiece. A variety of emblems have been used to express human mortality, such as the winged hourglass and a pair of skulls in the main panel. A belief in salvation is signified by the winged cherub above the inscription, symbol of the soul's ascent to heaven. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
