Scope and Content Detail of cross from chapel at Gleann na Gaoith', now held in Museum of Islay Life, Port Charlotte, Islay, Argyll and Bute The remains of a chapel and burial-ground lie at Gleann na Gaoith', c.5km north-east of Portnahaven on the south-east coast of Islay's Rhinns peninsula. The chapel may possibly date from as early as the 9th or 10th century. To the south-east of the chapel are the remains of a rough platform which may mark the site of a grave. Two Early Christian carved stones lie in the burial-ground, while a third from the chapel is now in the Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte, Islay. This stone is now held in the Museum of Islay Life. It is a roughly-shaped cruciform stone, similar to stones found on Iona, and was probably a grave-marker. The shaft is broken and was probably originally much longer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
