Innerleithen, St Ronan's Mill View from S of sluices

Description Innerleithen, St Ronan's Mill View from S of sluices

Date 7/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424515

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Sluices at St Ronan's Mill, Innerleithen, Peebles-shire This mill was built for wool spinning for George Roberts & Son of Selkirk, and was originally water-powered. Later a turbine was installed. By the time of this photograph the mill was disused. This view shows the sluices at the north end of the site that controlled the flow of water to the wheel (later turbine) that powered the mill. This is an interesting example of a manufacturer seeking a new water power site in the Borders, only a few years before railways brought cheaper coal to the area, which allowed steam power to become general.
