Date 3/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424404

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Midcalder (Kirknewton) Railway Station, Kirknewton, Midlothian This station was built by the Caledonian Railway on its line from Carstairs to Edinburgh. This view shows the sandstone ashlar construction of this one-storey and attic building. The crow-stepped gables with their ball finials and the mullioned windows are deliberately designed in a 'Scots Vernacular' style. This station is in the same style as the larger ones at Beattock (demolished) and Lockerbie (altered) which were designed by Sir William Tite, a leading designer of railway stations in the 1840s.
