Description Dalkeith, Ironmills Road, Iron Mill General view from S

Date 3/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424383

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Iron Mill, Ironmills Road, Dalkeith, Midlothian This mill was built in the form seen here as a flour miill, powered by the South Esk. This view shows the mill from the south. It is on an L plan, with a single-storey outshot and a domestic range adjacent to the east. The Tudor details suggest that it was built c1840. The name Iron Mill suggests that the site was used as a water-powered forge before the construction of this building. Flour milling here presumably ceased soon after the introduction of roller milling in the 1880s, and the machinery removed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
