Abbey Mill View from W

SC 424333

Description Abbey Mill View from W

Date 2/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424333

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former Abbey Mill, near Haddington, East Lothian Though this mill in its present form is mainly of late 18th century construction, it may well be on a medieval site, and incorporate some medieval masonry. This view shows that the mill is on an L plan. The pantile-roofed range on the right appears earlier than the slate-roofed block to the rear, which housed the kiln. By the time this photograph was taken the machinery had been removed from the mill, which was used as a store, a common fate for former water mills. When in use this mill would have ground oatmeal and animal feeding stuffs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
