Haddington, Abbey Bridge View from NNE

SC 424331

Description Haddington, Abbey Bridge View from NNE

Date 2/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424331

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Abbey Bridge, near Haddington, East Lothian This is one of only a handful of small medieval bridges surviving in Scotland. This view shows the three-span sandstone bridge from the east. Its pointed arches are clear indications of an early date when taken together with its rubble construction and massive cutwaters. The name of this bridge relates to the abbey of St Mary's, Haddington, and the bridge was probably built to ease the transport of rent paid in kind to the abbey granaries.
