Scope and Content Aerial view of Broch of Mousa, Shetland Islands The Broch of Mousa, which dates to around 100AD, is one of the best examples of a broch in Scotland. Brochs are thought to have been homes for important families, but also defensive buildings used by small communities if they were under threat for a limited period. When the broch was in use it would have had two or more wooden floors, and may also have had a wooden roof. Outside the broch there are the remains of a low wall, which may have been used as part of an enclosure for animals. There also used to be the ruins of small houses near the broch but these have disappeared, due to erosion caused by the sea. Shetland, situated to the north-east of Scotland, consists of over 100 islands, but only 20 are inhabited. It is thought people have lived in Shetland for 5,500 years, the first settlers being Neolithic farmers who may have travelled from the Orkney Islands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
