Scope and Content Valleyfield Paper Mill, Penicuik, Midlothian This was one of the oldest and largest paper mills in the Lothians. This view shows the mill from the entrance, with the mill chapel of c1830 on the left. The long two-storey range was probably the warehouse. Valleyfield was founded to make handmade paper from linen rags, pounded to a pulp by water-powered machinery. The pulp was the strained in wirecloth 'moulds' to make sheets of paper. From the early 19th century machinery replaced hand work. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
