Scope and Content Lasswade Viaduct, carrying the Esk Valley Railway over the River North Esk The Esk Valley Railway was built primarily to serve the paper mills of the valley. This view of the viaduct shows its masonry construction and its setting in the valley of the North Esk. This railway was one of a number of branches from the North British Railway's Waverley Route, built by local interests to gain the benefits of rail communication.
