Scope and Content View from north-east showing Islay House, Islay, Argyll and Bute Islay House stands to the north of the village of Bridgend, overlooking Loch Indaal. Erected in 1677 by Sir Hugh Campbell, the original house was altered and extended by a number of subsequent owners in 1731, the late 18th century, 1841 and 1909-11. This shows the rear elevation of the house. In the foreground are the ancillary buildings of 1841. These were designed by William Henry Playfair in a Scots Baronial style, with crowstepped gables and dormers, and a small round turret on the stair-tower. To the right is a single-storeyed cottage and court of offices which was added to the north of the main block in the late 18th century. A courtyard separates the main house from these service blocks.
