Scope and Content Interior view showing south stair at first-floor landing, Islay House, Islay, Argyll and Bute Islay House stands to the north of the village of Bridgend, overlooking Loch Indaal. Erected in 1677 by Sir Hugh Campbell, the original house was altered and extended by a number of subsequent owners in 1731, the late 18th century, 1841 and 1909-11. This is the staircase within the southern stair-tower, one of two which were added at opposite ends of the main block of the house in the late 18th century. The stair is lit by Palladian three-light windows at first and second floor. The spiral staircase has delicate wrought-iron balustrades topped by a wooden handrail and set on moulded stone treads. There are decorative consoles (top left and right) below the soffits (the underside) of the stair landings at each floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
