Scope and Content View from north-north-west showing main entrance front of Kilarrow Parish Church, Bowmore, Islay, Argyll and Bute The planned village of Bowmore stands on the east shore of Loch Indaal. It was established in 1768 by Daniel Campbell as part of his reorganisation of his estate, and involved the removal of the village of Kilarrow from the vicinity of Islay House. The distinctive circular Kilarrow Parish Church stands at the top of Main Street. It was built at a cost of £1,000 in 1767-9 to replace the former parish church in Kilarrow. Traditionally, the circular plan provided no corners for the devil to hide in. The church is two-storeyed with a rectangular four-storeyed tower on the north elevation. Four blank panels at the second stage were intended to hold clock faces. The upper two stages are octagonal, and the belfry is topped by a small stone dome or cupola.
