Scope and Content View of thatched cottage at 62 Jamieson Street, Bowmore, Islay, Argyll and Bute The planned village of Bowmore stands on the east shore of Loch Indaal. It was established in 1768 by Daniel Campbell as part of his reorganisation of his estate, and involved the removal of the village of Kilarrow from the vicinity of Islay House. In 1793 the village comprised 110 houses and had a population of 500, which had risen to 850 by 1891. The village was established to house farm workers and labourers. A distillery was also founded in the village in 1779, and is still in operation today. Many of the houses in the village originally had thatched roofs. This was the last surviving example, which was demolished soon after this photograph was taken in 1965. The thatch was held in place by a series of ropes across the roof.
