Scope and Content Detail of effigy in Kilchiaran Chapel, Islay, Argyll and Bute The village of Kilchiaran is situated on the west of the Rhinns peninsula of Islay. The medieval chapel is dedicated to St Ciaran. It was roofless by 1794, and was partly restored and reconstructed by the Islay Historic Buildings Works Group in 1972-3. This tapered slab is located within the remains of the chapel. The upper two-thirds show a double-cusped niche with an ogival (pointed arch) head. Within the niche is the figure of a priest, with hands clasped in prayer. Below his hands is a chalice. Other decoration on the slab includes foliage flanking the head of the niche, and a foliated cross below the priest. At the bottom of the slab is a blank panel which may originally have borne an inscription. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
