Scope and Content Drawing showing plan of buildings around Loch Gorm Castle, Islay, Argyll and Bute Loch Gorm lies north-east of Kilchoman on the Rhinns peninsula of Islay. These remains of a fortification on a tiny island in the loch date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries when it was the scene of conflicts between the MacDonalds and MacLeans. This shows a plan of the three rectangular buildings within the curtain wall which were used for the garrison during various sieges. Building A was cruck-framed - a form of timber-framing using timber 'crucks' or couples springing from the side-walls. The castle was rectangular with round towers at each corner, with the entrance probably in the east wall behind a curved section of wall. The curtain walls and towers of the castle are of drystone boulder construction and the curtain wall was turf-backed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
