Scope and Content View from south showing cottage and engine-house at Mulreesh lead mines, Islay, Argyll and Bute Mulreesh lead mines are located 3km west of Port Askaig on Islay. Possibly worked during Norse times, the most active period for the mines was the 18th and 19th centuries when they were the most important workings of the Islay Lead Mining Company. This shows the remains of the engine-house adjoining a cottage. The engine house was built when the shafts became too deep for the water wheel to work effectively. A beam engine was used to pump water from the mine shafts. The remains of a total of ten shafts are in evidence today. Many of these have been filled with refuse, and are fenced or walled off.
