Scope and Content Detail of West Highland grave-slab at Nereabolls Chapel, Islay, Argyll and Bute Nereabolls lies south of Port Charlotte on the Rhinns peninsula of Islay. The chapel has been dated to the medieval period, and may have been dedicated to St Columba. Very little now remains of the building. Within the ruins of the chapel, there are a number of funerary monuments, many of which have been moved from their original positions. Most of those which have been moved are now held in the Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte. This 14th-15th century tapered slab bears a carved sword, a symbol of power and strength. Above the sword is a foliated cross linked to plant-stems which surround the sword. The rectangular panel at the base may have originally been inscribed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
