Scope and Content Barley-hopper, Bruichladdich Distillery, Islay, Argyll Bruichladdich Distillery was built in the 1880s. It is a good example of a distillery constructed in one phase to a carefully conceived plan. This barley-hopper was used to spread wet barley evenly over the malt-barn floor so that it can germinate, converting starch into sugars vital to the fermentation process. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is fermented with yeast. The resulting wash is distilled to produce whisky which must then be matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
