Scope and Content Bunnahabhainn Distillery, Islay, Argyll Bunnahabhainn was built in 1881 and is a fine example of a purpose-built distillery, designed for maximum efficiency. The boat is delivering barley. Like the other Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhainn is sited next to the sea for direct access to water-transport. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is fermented with yeast. The resulting wash is distilled to produce whisky which must then be matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
