Scope and Content Ironing machine in Cart Bank Laundry, Kilbarchan Road, Johnstone, Renfrewshire This is a large ironing machine for ironing bed linen and other large flat items. This view shows the back of the machine, with the trough for catching the finished ironing. Small laundries of this type were common in Scotland from c1900 until the 1960s, when domestic washing machines became common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
