Scope and Content Washing machines in Cart Bank Laundry, Kilbarchan Road, Johnstone, Renfrewshire It was the invention of washing machines of the type on the right that made the centralised laundry service possible. In this view there is a typical early 20th century commercial washing machine on the right, and a more modern one on the left. The man in the background is operating one of the older type of machines. Small laundries of this type were common in Scotland from c1900 until the 1960s, when domestic washing machines became common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
