Scope and Content West front of Cart Bank Laundry, Kilbarchan Road, Johnstone, Renfrewshire This was a typical mechanised laundry serving mainly private customers. This view shows that the buildings were single storey and of brick construction. Note the setted roadway with causey slabs to make the route easier for horses hauling iron-tyred vehicles. Small laundries of this type were common in Scotland from c1900 until the 1960s, when domestic washing machines became common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
