Scope and Content Interior of the weaving sheds of the former Newark Sail Cloth Co (latterly store for Kingston Shipyard), Port Glasgow The Newark Sail Cloth Co was established to make sailcloth for the many sailing vessels built in Greenock and Port Glasgow in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It then turned to making canvas for other purposes. This view shows what was a typical north-light weaving shed, with a timber roof, glazed on the north slopes to provide shadow-free lighting, and supported on cast iron columns After the closure of the works in the 1960s it was taken over as a store for the Kingston Shipbuilding Yard. Here it is being used for storing paint Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
