Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 422856

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glen Shipyard of Scott Lithgow Ltd., Greenock, with a half tanker under construction Because the road in the foreground restricted the length of the building slip at the Glen Yard, very large tankers were built in halves and joined when afloat. This view shows one such. This shows a half tanker being assembled from sub-assemblies prefabricated under cover in the Kingston Yard. The goliath crane for lifting these into place is in the background. The Glen Yard was rebuilt with a single large slipway, served by a goliath crane, to build very large vessels. This building was the only older part to survive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
