Scope and Content Malting-floor, former malt barn, Bruichladdich Distillery, Islay, Argyll Bruichladdich Distillery was built in the 1880s. It is a good example of a distillery constructed in one phase to a carefully conceived plan. Steeped wet barley was spread on this (now disused) tiled malting-floor and regularly turned until it germinated. Cast-iron columns support the beams of the level above, allowing for the maximum floor space without supporting walls. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is fermented with yeast. The resulting wash is distilled to produce whisky which must then be matured in casks.
