Scope and Content Barring engine of a stationary steam engine in the Grandholm Mills/ Works, Aberdeen, of Crombie & Co, woollen cloth manufacturers Crombie & Co were leading producers of high-quality woollen cloth for coats and suits. The engine of which this was a part drove part of the mill machinery. This view shows the barring engine during dismantling. The main engine was built by Hick, Hargreaves of Bolton, and had two cylinders in line with each other. He barring engine turned the flywheel until the engine would start easily. The engine was photographed while it was being carefully dismantled for preservation by the Scottish Society for the Preservation of Historical Machinery, Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
