Scope and Content Slotting machine at the Blantyre Engineering Co Ltd. works, Blantyre, Lanarkshire The Blantyre Engineering Co were general engineers, but did much work for the mining industry. This was one of the machine tools they used in making accurately machined parts. This view shows a slotting machine, a tool designed to cut slots in precision machine parts. This one is by Thomas Shanks & Co of Johnstone, the leading Scottish maker of this type of machine tool. The slotting machine was part of the standard equipment of a general engineering works until replaced by the milling machine, which could perform a wider range of work.
