Scope and Content St Giles' Cathedral from Parliament Square, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been the central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. It is a cross-church with additions, mainly on the south side, making its shape irregular. The most recent addition was the Thistle Chapel in 1911. Parliament Square, once part of the kirkyard of St Giles where John Knox, minister from 1559-72, was buried, was built as the square for the new buildings for the Scottish Parliament in the 17th century. It is now the seat of the High Courts of Scotland. The Order of the Thistle, Scotland's oldest Order of Chivalry, founded in the 15th century by James III, is given to distinguished Scots for services to the nation. Its permanent home for religious ceremonies is in the Thistle Chapel at St Giles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
