Scope and Content Sample of madras cloth woven in Morton, Young & Borland's factory, Stoneygate Road, Greenholm, Ayrshire The manufacture of machine-made lace curtains and tablecloths was introduced into the Irvine Valley in the 1870s. In the 1880s 'madras' cloth was introduced to complement machine lace. This view shows a piece of madras cloth after the uncut madras has had its loose weft threads sucked up and trimmed off by a rotary knife, as in a lawnmower. In madras cloth the pattern is formed by using soft cross-threads (weft), selectively woven into the fabric. Where the threads are not caught they are cut off, giving opaque motifs against a fine gauze background. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
