Scope and Content Backs of a row of madras looms in Morton, Young & Borland's factory, Stoneygate Road, Greenholm, Newmilns, Ayrshire The manufacture of machine-made lace curtains and tablecloths was introduced into the Irvine Valley in the 1870s. In the 1880s 'madras' cloth was introduced to complement machine lace; these looms were made for weaving this product. This view shows the back of a row of madras looms, with the line of shafting and pulleys, driving the looms, fastened to the columns supporting the roof of the weaving shed. The roof is glazed on the north slopes to give even light in the shed.. In madras cloth the pattern is formed by using soft cross-threads (weft), selectively woven into the fabric. Where the threads are not caught they are cut off, giving opaque motifs against a fine gauze background. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
