Scope and Content Bowmore Distillery, Islay, Argyll Early 20th-century photograph of the jetty in operation Bowmore is said to have been founded in 1779 and has changed hands several times up to the present day. This early 20th-century photograph shows coal being delivered to the distillery's jetty by small boats and transported by horse-drawn carts. The coal and peat fuelled the distillery's kilns, stills and boilers. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is fermented with yeast. The resulting wash is distilled to produce whisky which must then be matured in casks.
