Scope and Content View of cross slab at Dòid Mhàiri, Port Ellen, Islay, Argyll and Bute This slab was discovered in 1838 during the clearance of Dòid Mhàiri ('Mary's croft'), c.200m west of Port Ellen Distillery. Re-sited at Kildalton House, it was presented to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (now NMS) in 1923. Roughly rectangular in shape, the cross slab has been attributed to the late 11th century. On this face is a ring-headed cross carved in low relief. Above the arms of the cross are two discs with sunken centres, thought to represent the moon and the sun. Further decoration is in the form of tendrils flanking the cross shaft, which have been identified as a motif characteristic of Scandinavian art. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
