Scope and Content Window, bonded warehouse, Laphroaig Distillery, Islay, Argyll The Laphroaig Distillery was established in the mid 19th century as part of a farm. It is a good example of the type of distillery which emerged after changes in the law in 1816 and 1823, and developed slowly to become a large production complex. This barred window belongs to one of the bonded warehouses built in the early 20th century. Large secure warehouses are required to accommodate whisky whilst it matures for a minimum of three years. A law passed in 1823 allowed distillers to store whisky in bonded - that is, secure - warehouses without paying excise duty. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
