Scope and Content Malt barn, Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll Ardbeg Distillery was founded in the late 18th century by Alexander Stewart, but is first recorded in operation in 1817-18. The malt barn is typical of its kind. It was built to process large batches of barley, and contains three floors on which the barley can be converted into malt. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is fermented with yeast. The resulting wash is distilled to produce whisky which must then be matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
