Scope and Content Detail of cast-iron column within bonded warehouse, Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll Ardbeg Distillery was founded in the late 18th century by Alexander Stewart, but is first recorded in operation in 1817-18. This shows how the bonded warehouse's wooden beams are supported by cast iron columns. The building needs a strong internal structure because of the weight of the whisky barrels it stores. A law passed in 1823 allowed distillers to store whisky in bonded - that is, secure - warehouses without paying excise duty. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
