Scope and Content Casks in bonded warehouse, Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll Ardbeg Distillery was founded in the late 18th century by Alexander Stewart, but is first recorded in operation in 1817-18. A law passed in 1823 allowed distillers to store whisky in bonded - that is, secure - warehouses without paying excise duty. Whisky must mature for at least three years, after which it can be mixed with grain whiskies to form blended whisky, or can be matured further to become a single-malt whisky.
