Scope and Content Land and Property Plan, Bowmore Distillery, Islay Bowmore is an example of a planned village, founded by Daniel Campbell in 1768. In 1779, Bowmore Distillery was founded by David Simson, and gradually expanded on its site near the harbour. This allowed easy access to transport by sea. Distilling was originally a domestic operation, but Bowmore is reputed to be one of the earliest legal distilleries on Islay. Various pieces of legislation between 1816 and 1823 led to some 16 licensed distilleries springing up on the island. The distillery passed through various owners throughout its existence, but is now one of only a few independently owned distilleries in Scotland, with its own visitor centre.
