Scope and Content Plan of Black House C, Village, St Kilda Black House C, built during Mackenzie's 1830s reorganisation, was a typical black house, that is a traditional Hebridian house, with thick un-mortared walls and a thatched roof. With House 3, it was the home of the Gillies family until the 1900s. Cattle were kept in the south end (left). The dotted lines show connections to the drainage system. Traces of glazing survive in the window of the north annexe (right). Neil Mackenzie, minister in 1830-43, brought major changes to the St Kilda. He persuaded the villagers to abandon the run-rig system of allotting land. Instead, they divided the village into plots and built new houses, all connected to a drainage system.
