Scope and Content Drawings of bothy on Stac Lee, St Kilda The bothy on Stac Lee was built before the 17th century. The islanders used it for shelter in case of rough seas during the August seafowling season when the gannets were 'harvested' before they flew away for the winter. These drawings show how the bothy was sited under the protection of an overhanging rock on the south face of the stac, that is a pillar of rock rising from the ocean. In 1697, it was estimated that every year the St Kildans took between 5,000 and 7,000 gannets from Stac Lee, about half the annual harvest. At the time, each islander also ate over 100 eggs every week. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
