Scope and Content Drawing showing plan of Loch Gorm Castle, Islay, Argyll and Bute Loch Gorm lies north-east of Kilchoman on the Rhinns peninsula of Islay. These remains of a fortification on a tiny island in the loch date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries when it was the scene of conflicts between the MacDonalds and MacLeans. As the plan shows, the castle was rectangular with round towers or bastions on each corner. Within the curtain walls are the remains of three rectangular buildings which were used for the garrison during various sieges. The entrance to the castle was probably in the east (right) wall behind the curved section of wall. The curtain walls and towers of the castle are of drystone boulder construction, as are the buildings within. The curtain wall was turf-backed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
