Scope and Content Drawing showing plan of chapel and burial-ground at Kilnaughton, Islay, Argyll and Bute This late medieval chapel and burial-ground stand at Kilnaughton, c.2km west of Port Ellen on Islay's south coast. The chapel was dedicated to the 7th-century Scottish saint, St Nechtan, and remained in use until the end of the 17th century. This plan shows the two 18th- or 19th-century burial-enclosures which were added to the north wall of the chapel. Rubble-built, the chapel had two opposing doorways and three windows in the north and south walls (left), which were blocked at a later date. The chapel has been roofless and 'much decayed' since the late 18th century. In the east wall is an L-shaped aumbry, or small cupboard, which was used to store the chapel's sacred vessels for communion. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
