Scope and Content Detail of West Highland grave-slab from Kilnaughton Old Parish Church, now held in the Museum of Islay Life, Port Charlotte, Islay, Argyll and Bute A late medieval chapel and burial-ground stand at Kilnaughton, c.2km west of Port Ellen on Islay's south coast. The chapel was dedicated to the 7th-century Scottish saint, St Nechtan, and remained in use until the end of the 17th century. There are a number of medieval grave-slabs within the chapel, some of which have been removed to the Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte. The burial-ground contains many post-Reformation (1560) grave-slabs which are still in their original positions. This 14th- or 15th-century tapered slab bears a central carved sword, which is a symbol of power and strength. Above the sword hilt is a foliated cross, and on either side of the sword are circling plant-scrolls which are linked to the cross. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
