Scope and Content Temple Wood, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Temple Wood was excavated by J G Scott between 1974-9. His work revealed the remains of a smaller and earlier stone circle to the north-east of the main ring and a series of burials previously unknown. Decorative designs were found during excavation on two of the 22 upright stones on the northern side of the main circle. The significance of this design, a pair of concentric rings remains uncertain. This is one of a series of impressive prehistoric monuments situated in the Kilmartin Valley. Built for burial or ritual purposes they would have provided a focus for the whole community.
