Catalogue Number SC 414605

Copy of A 13510

Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Poltalloch, Argyll and Bute Within woodland near the ruins of Poltalloch House are two outcrops of rock adorned with impressive cup-and-ring markings. The main rock face is fractured and some markings have unfortunately sheered off. Carved into the outcrop of rock are over 80 plain cupmarks and others with varying numbers of rings around them. Note two unusual star-shaped markings, one enclosed by a ring. Similar markings are known from carvings in Irish passage-graves. The Kilmartin area has some of the best examples of later Neolithic and Bronze Age rock-art (particularly cup-and-ring marks) in Scotland. Similar rock-art occurs in north-western Spain, Brittany and Ireland. Why people carved them remains unclear. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
